Local Energy Independence, LLC (LEI) is a developer of renewable energy projects for communities to become more energy independent. It uses a “model” developed by Mayor George Fitch for his community, Warrenton and Fauquier County Virginia and applies it to other communities. The model was the centerpiece of his Green Initiative launched in 2006 that set a goal of a 50% reduction in the carbon footprint of the community by 2020.

The model, which was validated by a feasibility study, determined that small scale biomass plants or biorefineries at landfills are economically and technically viable and will attract private investments so there is no risk or cost to communities. LEI is focused primarily on smaller municipal, county and regional areas. It seeks these markets for their community support, controllable feedstock, profitable energy market access and local relationships that together ensure sound economic performance. LEI has developed strategic partnerships with technology vendors, equipment suppliers and engineering, design and construction firms.
